What Is a Dental Implant?
The dental implant is a small titanium post which we attach to your jawbone. Then an artificial tooth is attached to the titanium post and remains permanently fixed in your mouth. Implants are made from titanium because it’s a metal which the body doesn’t reject and it won’t trigger an allergic reaction. Your bone will actually start to grow around the titanium post, fusing to it and anchoring it securely in place.
How Are Dental Implants Done?
Every person has a unique situation, so the first step is to determine whether dental implants will work for you. Once we’ve established that implants are right for you, we can start the implant procedure.
We drill a small hole in your jaw bone for the titanium post. This post acts like a root for the artificial tooth (crown) which will be attached later.
As your jaw bone heals, it will fuse to the titanium post, anchoring it firmly. Bone grows and heals slowly, so it will take several weeks to a few months before the implant is securely anchored and ready to receive the crown.
Once your bone has securely fused around the implant, we attach a metal piece called an “abutment” to the implant. This abutment holds the crown which is your new, permanently attached tooth.
